During a public rally of the Team Daang Matuwid in the Bacolod region, Senatorial bet and former Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla reiterated to the crowd that his top advocacy is to ensure that the prices of electricity will go down. Petilla notes that the DOE is a difficult and unpopular portfolio of the government. He admits he is not a popular candidate, but he is hoping that his advocacies and experience in the energy sector will help him push for legislative reforms once he is in office.
When asked if he is counting on the Waray vote to help him land a senatorial seat, Petilla said he is confident that he will have the solid support of every Waray in the country who believes in him and the things he is fighting for.
The Waray vote being referred to are those coming from the Waray Region or the Eastern Visayas Region. It is composed of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Samar, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar provinces.
Born and raised in Leyte, Petilla admits that most of his kababayans feel that the Waray region is a neglected part of the country. The Warays feel that it is about time for the region to produce a national figure that will truly represent the interest of the Waray as a people. He is confident that a national seat such a senate seat would definitely help boost the development of Leyte and all the provinces of Eastern Visayas.
Eastern Visayas is considered among the poorest in the country and has not produced a senator in more than 50 years. The last was Decoroso Rosales, from Calbayog City in Samar, who was senator from 1955 until 1961.
